First-time buyer timeline: from saving to completion
Buying a first home feels less chaotic when the journey is broken into stages. Not every purchase follows the same timetable, but the preparation work, property search and transaction can still be organised into a clear sequence.
Stage 1: preparing
Build the cash target, understand likely monthly payments, review credit information and organise the core identity, income and bank evidence you may need later.
Stage 2: ready to search
Decide the property-price range you are comfortable with, keep transaction costs outside the deposit and understand the difference between a planning estimate and a lender decision.
Stage 3: offer accepted
Once an offer is accepted, the mortgage application, valuation or survey, conveyancing and evidence requests begin to interact. Keeping one milestone list reduces the risk of missing a task because different firms are involved.
Stage 4: buying and completion
The legal work, mortgage offer, exchange or equivalent jurisdictional steps, funds and practical moving arrangements need to converge before completion. The exact legal process depends on where in the UK you are buying.
