Remortgaging: what to organise before your current deal ends
A remortgage decision is easier when the existing loan, property plans and wider finances are reviewed together rather than treating the end date as a last-minute rate-shopping exercise.
Know the current deal
Keep the current balance, interest rate, monthly payment, deal end date, remaining term and any early-repayment charge together in one place.
Decide what you want to change
The goal might be a new rate, a different term, additional borrowing, a repayment of capital, a change of borrowers or simply reviewing whether staying with the current lender is sensible. Those are different jobs.
Recheck the property and household position
Property value, income, commitments and future plans may all have moved since the last mortgage. Update the picture before comparing routes.
Leave room for implementation
Do not make the first review the day the current deal ends. The exact timing depends on the lender and route, but creating a reminder months ahead gives you time to gather information and compare options without panic.
